MBA Office of Student Life awards are given annually to outstanding members of the Wharton MBA community. Recipients are nominated and voted upon by their fellow classmates. Award winners are presented with their award at Office of Student Life end of year events for each class – First Year Send-Off and Graduation Pub.
The Student Life Fellow Community Award
The recipient of this award is an SLF who has provided small and large events to encourage community building at different levels. They provided an opportunity to feel re-engaged with the Wharton community, and increased students’ feeling of belonging to their Graduating Class and the Wharton School.

Joseph P. Wharton Award
In 1881, Joseph P. Wharton founded the world’s first collegiate business school. His founding mission was to “prepare graduates with the breadth and depth of knowledge to become ‘pillars of the State, whether in private or in public life.’” In honor of the founder of The Wharton School and his founding vision, The Joseph P. Wharton Award honors the student who best exemplifies the values that distinguish the Wharton School from its peers.

In the words of Benjamin Franklin: “Tell me, and I forget. Teach me, and I may remember. Involve me, and I learn.” The Ben Franklin Spirit Award recognizes the Wharton student who has contributed the most to our Wharton School spirit, embodying our founder by involving him or herself in the Wharton school and the Wharton community to advance his/her learning objectives and to advance his/her peers’ Wharton experience.

The Patrick T. Harker “Wharton Way” Award
The Patrick T. Harker “Wharton Way” Award honors the student who best exemplifies the Wharton tradition of service, participation, and involvement through his/her activities at the Wharton School. This student embodies the “pay-it-forward” mentality that makes the Wharton community so special. He or she consistently exceeds expectations in and out of the classroom to support classmates and peers and give back to the community.

The Benjamin Schuttler Award for Perseverance and Community Impact
Benjamin (Benji) Schuttler had a remarkable ability to touch everyone he met. His optimism was infectious, and our community members were touched by his kindness, generosity, toughness, and positivity. Benji passed away in November 2016 of complications from a serious car accident he had been in the year before. Benji wanted to change the world by improving access to education for students of limited means. In his international travels, he saw that many children did not have the opportunity to attend school. Benji passionately believed education was the key to a better life and was working on a plan to create an organization to fund educational programs globally. Remembering Benji, WG’18, this award goes to the member of the class who most consistently displays leadership amongst their peers through selflessness, impactful positivity, a passion for social impact, and a willingness to meet challenges in the face of adversity.

Giving back and paying it forward are hallmarks of the Wharton community. The Unsung Hero Award recognizes the student who gives freely, but asks for no thanks in return. The Unsung Hero is ready to swoop in at a moment’s notice to offer their support, help problem solve, share a kind word, or roll up their sleeves and dive in to lend a hand in any situation.
